The Role of Scent in Yoga: Creating a Sacred Space with Care

By Terri Silipo

As a yoga teacher focused on therapeutic and restorative practices, I often consider how to create a space that invites deep relaxation and inner awareness. One element I sometimes include is the use of scent, whether through essential oils, incense, or the gentle glow of a candle. These small rituals can help signal the transition from the outer world to a more inward, nourishing space. But as with all tools in yoga, their use must be intentional, respectful, and optional.

Why Use Scent in Yoga?

Scent has a direct connection to the limbic system, the part of the brain that processes emotion and memory. A subtle waft of lavender or sandalwood can calm the nervous system, ground the breath, and enhance the experience of presence. Lighting a candle or placing a drop of oil on the wrists can feel like a sacred invitation to slow down and return home to the body.

For many students, these sensory elements help anchor them in the moment. They can deepen the practice, especially in restorative, yin, or meditative classes, where stillness and interoception are key.

Being Mindful of Sensitivities

That said, I am deeply aware that not everyone finds scent comforting. Some individuals have sensitivities, allergies, or past experiences that make strong smells overwhelming or even harmful. My goal is to create a healing environment, not a distracting one.

That’s why I always use these tools sparingly, and I welcome feedback at any time. I also include a Scent Sensitivity Notice on my website and in class descriptions, so students can make informed choices. If you’re sensitive to smells, just let me know—your comfort and wellbeing are always a priority.

Alternatives and Options

Instead of diffusing oils into the room, I might offer an optional drop on a tissue, placed near your mat. I sometimes use flameless candles or natural room sprays in low-traffic corners. Every practice space is different, and I’m always happy to adapt.

Creating a Shared Space with Care

Yoga invites us to become more attuned—not only to ourselves, but to one another. The tools we use should reflect that spirit of care. Whether it’s the scent of frankincense in the air or simply the quiet hum of shared breath, my intention is always to help you feel safe, grounded, and supported.

Thank you for being part of this community and for helping co-create a mindful, inclusive space.

Namaste 🙏🏻
